Prof. Sumana Dutta, Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Guwahati, chaired the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Oscillations and Dynamic Instabilities in Chemical Systems, held in Les Diablerets, Switzerland, from May 3–8, 2026. The 2026 edition marked the 20th iteration of the conference series, which began in 1982.
The GRC is regarded as one of the premier international forums for nonlinear chemical dynamics and self-organizing systems. It is known to foster scientific dialogue through the presentation of cutting-edge and often unpublished research. The conference also encourages close interaction among researchers from diverse fields and career stages.
Discussions spanned both foundational topics in nonlinear chemical dynamics and emerging interdisciplinary areas. These included chemical self-organization, complex reaction networks, and pattern formation, alongside applications in cardiac electrophysiology, synthetic biology, active matter, soft robotics, advanced materials, and sustainable energy systems.
The conference saw participation from leading researchers across the world, including several scientists from India, reflecting the growing contribution of Indian institutions to this internationally significant research domain. Many early-career researchers also had the opportunity to present their work and engage with global experts in the field.
A notable feature of the conference was its emphasis on mentorship and community-building. Dedicated sessions, including the traditional “Power Hour,” provided a platform for open discussions on professional development, equity, inclusion, and the challenges faced by researchers at different stages of their careers.
Prof. Dutta’s leadership provided an important platform for fostering collaborations, strengthening scientific exchange, and shaping future directions in the study of complex dynamical systems.
