IT Guwahati has formalised a Memorandum of Understanding with Japanese semiconductor major Toho Koki Seisakusho Co., Ltd., marking a significant step in the institute's growing academic and industry ties with Japan and strengthening India's push into advanced chip manufacturing research.

The MoU was signed on 30 June, 2026, by Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, and Tatsutoshi Suzuki, President, Toho Koki.

The agreement paves the way for faculty exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, and student internships, with a sharp focus on technologies central to semiconductor manufacturing — including Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) Pad Technology, Next Generation Wafer Planarization Technology, and AlN Template development.

Under the partnership, faculty members from IIT Guwahati and and PIs from Toho Koki will work together to build an academic ecosystem geared toward translational research, while also exchanging knowledge and collaborating on emerging technologies in the semiconductor space.

The MoU is part of a broader wave of India-Japan collaboration, with semiconductors emerging as a key pillar of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in recent months.
