IIT Guwahati and Gifu University Anchor Historic 22-Institution Consortium to Bridge Northeast India and Japan

Led by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, and Gifu University, Japan, 22 institutions from across Northeast India signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish the Northeast India–Japan International Academic and Research Consortium. This historic alliance was created at the annual Japan–NER Academia–Industry Cooperation Symposium 2026 (JNTCS 2026).

A Foundation of Long-Term Partnership

This consortium is underpinned by a 15-year relationship between IIT Guwahati and Gifu University. Acting as the nodal institutes for India and Japan respectively, these two organisations are leveraging their established friendship to coordinate a massive multilateral network.

By bringing together eight NITs, two IIITs, AIIMS Guwahati, and several state universities onto a shared platform, the consortium aims to solve global challenges in food security, healthcare, and sustainable energy while driving the industrial transformation of Northeast India.

A Multi-Layered Ecosystem: Education, Industry, and Research

While the partnership opens unprecedented avenues for global education, its scope extends significantly into industrial and scientific sectors. Over the next five years, the joint initiative will facilitate:

  • Human Capital Mobility A target of 10,000 total student exchanges (5,000 in each direction) to create a workforce with global exposure.

  • Industry-Academia Linkages The consortium aims to create a "Research-to-Production" pathway for technology transfer.

  • Frontier Research Multilateral collaborations spanning science, technology, and medicine, supported by the LOTUS programme which aims to host 1,000 Indian doctoral researchers in Japan annually.

Today marks a new beginning, as institutions across states unite to form a unique consortium that brings together engineers, medical professionals, scientists, and policymakers—groups who rarely have the chance to interact. Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati

Strategic Alignment and the Act East Policy

The initiative serves as a critical gateway for India’s Act East Policy, linking the Northeast’s scientific potential with Japan’s industrial capabilities. Since 2022, Japan has designated Northeast India as a strategic priority through the MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project. This institutional synergy reflects a broader national cooperation, much like the strategic alignment seen between ISRO and JAXA in the space sector.

IIT Guwahati is proud to bring the Eight Sisters of the Northeast onto a shared platform, fostering a consortium that supports collective growth and cross-border collaboration. Prof. Sumana Dutta, Dean, Alumni and External Relations, IIT Guwahati
