IIT Guwahati Hosts PRISM India 2026

Programme for Research & Inquiry by Students in Mathematics (PRISM) is a pioneering programme that encourages school students to engage with mathematics as researchers do—through exploration, discussion, conjecture, and discovery.

This summer, IIT Guwahati and the 101 Foundation have partnered to host PRISM India (Programme for Research & Inquiry by Students in Mathematics), a six-week residential programme designed for school students studying in Class IX and above who demonstrate exceptional mathematical promise.

Running from 20 May to 30 June 2026, PRISM India focuses on number theory and advanced mathematical topics, providing students with opportunities to develop mathematical ideas for themselves in a deeply collaborative environment. Internationally reputed mathematicians will visit IIT Guwahati as resource persons, exposing participants to diverse perspectives and advanced concepts that extend far beyond the standard school curriculum.

One of the distinctive features of PRISM India is its intensive mentorship model. Every two students are paired with a dedicated counsellor who remains available throughout the programme for discussions, guidance, and collaborative problem-solving. This level of individual attention creates an environment where students can develop a deep confidence in their own mathematical thinking.

As a fully residential programme, PRISM India extends learning beyond the classroom. In addition to structured academic sessions emphasis is placed on informal discussions, peer interactions, and intellectual exploration outside scheduled hours. The objective is to cultivate a culture of inquiry in which learning is driven not only by instruction but also by the students' own curiosity and imagination.

In an era shaped by artificial intelligence and automation PRISM India emphasises the uniquely human dimensions of mathematics: imagination, insight, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity. Rather than focusing solely on finding answers, the programme encourages students to explore how new questions emerge and how mathematical knowledge itself is created.

The programme is directed by Professor Ila Varma of the University of Toronto. At IIT Guwahati, the programme is coordinated by Professor Sukanta Pati and Professor Swaroop Nandan Bora from the Department of Mathematics. Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IITG, is the patron.
