On 17 February 2026, IIT Guwahati hosted 37 youth delegates from 16 nations, including South Africa, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK, and the USA. Organised under the Know India Programme (KIP)—a flagship initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)—the visit introduced young members of the Indian diaspora to the cultural heritage and technological growth of their ancestral homeland. For many participants, whose families left India over a century ago, the visit marked a first physical connection to the country.

A Blend of Tradition and Technology

The delegation was received by Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal and the Institute's Deans. Following a traditional felicitation with the Phulaam Gamosa, Prof. Jalihal addressed the group on the role of academic institutions in driving India’s future while preserving deep cultural ties.

The itinerary highlighted the Institute’s dual identity:

  • Scientific Excellence: The group toured the Central Instruments Facility (CIF), gaining insights into the advanced research infrastructure powering India’s indigenous innovation.

  • Cultural Immersion: Delegates explored the 700-acre campus and concluded their visit with a traditional Indian lunch alongside the IITG community.

Strengthening Global Bonds

The impact of these visits extends beyond the lab. By engaging with the diaspora, IIT Guwahati serves as a gateway for global citizens to explore their historical identity and India’s current trajectory in research and development. Reflecting on the experience, several delegates noted a profound sense of reconnection.

IIT Guwahati remains committed to supporting national initiatives like KIP, and fostering enduring ties between India and its global community.
