IIT Guwahati Welcomes the Class of 2001 for Its Silver Jubilee Reunion

The Class of 2001 – one of the earliest graduating batches of IIT Guwahati – returned for Smriti 2026, their Silver Jubilee Reunion. From 30 July to 1 August, the Bhupen Hazarika Auditorium and the corridors of IIT Guwahati filled with the laughter of old friends, as they converted nostalgia into a message of optimism.

Smriti 2026 was built around reconnection — with old classmates, with old teachers, and with the Institute itself. Over three days, alumni sat down with Institute leadership, faculty, and current students for conversations, departmental visits, showcases of student innovation and entrepreneurship, and open house discussions.

But some of the warmest moments happened away from the formal agenda. Alumni wandered back to the transit complex, remembering late-night snack runs and swapping stories of the kind that only a hostel campus creates. Old nicknames resurfaced. The senate hall echoed with laughter as faculty and former students traded memories of the Institute's early, formative years — a time when the campus itself was still young, and it was growing up alongside the very students who had now returned as leaders in their fields.

Building From Nothing

For many in the Class of 2001, this was also a chance to revisit the places where they had once worked to prove themselves, often with little more than ambition and a willingness to try.

One alumnus recalled carrying a handmade robot to a technical festival at IIT Bombay — an experience that helped spark the idea for what would become Techniche, IIT Guwahati's own technical festival. Twenty-seven years later, Techniche now draws tens of thousands of participants each year, a legacy that traces directly back to the initiative of students who worked with self-belief, grit and tenacity.

Advice From the Other Side

The reunion's centrepiece was an Open House at the Bhupen Hazarika Auditorium, where alumni spoke candidly with today's students about the years that shaped them — as people first, and professionals second. Their message was simple and hard-won:

• Train for excellence.

• Build. Don't sulk.

• Take risks.

• Expect setbacks — they are a part of success.

A Community That Endures

Today, the Class of 2001 is scattered across the world as entrepreneurs, technology leaders, educators, and professionals — proof of how far an IIT Guwahati education can carry someone. But for three days in July and August, none of that distance mattered. The reunion reinforced the bond between the Institute, its alumni, and its students. A bond that doesn't fade with time — it just waits for the next reunion to come alive again.
