IIT Guwahati Trains Farmers Across Three Assam Districts in Push to Map Region's Soil Carbon

A one-day training programme at KVK Cachar on May 22 put soil organic carbon testing kits in the hands of 24 farmers drawn from 27 blocks across three Assam districts

A one-day Training-cum-Capacity Building Programme on “Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) Kit and Its Distribution” was successfully organized by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati in collaboration with ICAR-ATARI Zone VI, Guwahati, on 22nd May, 2026, at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Cachar, Assam. Prof Sudip Mitra is the Project Investigator. 

The program witnessed the participation of District Agriculture Officials, Heads of respective KVKs, Subject Matter Specialists from different KVKs, officials from ATARI Guwahati Zone VI, scientific staff from IIT Guwahati, and 24 participating farmers, to strengthen awareness and practical understanding of soil health and Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) assessment.

The program focused on the training and distribution of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) kits across three districts of Assam, bringing together farmers from 15 blocks of Cachar district, 7 blocks of Sribhumi (Karimganj) district, and 5 blocks of Hailakandi district. 

The program commenced with sessions focusing on the importance of Soil Organic Carbon and its role in maintaining soil health, followed by training on scientific procedures for soil sample collection from farmers’ fields for SOC assessment. 

It was followed by a technical and hands-on training session, where participating farmers carried out testing of soil samples collected from their respective field areas, gaining practical exposure to field-based Soil Organic Carbon assessment methods, and concluded with the distribution of kits.
