Data is no longer a niche technical concern. It is a fundamental part of every modern industry. From healthcare and finance to logistics and the creative arts, the ability to understand and use data is now needed by everyone.

This shift is seen in the different types of students who join the programme. There are more than 3,000 students from over 70 countries. Every state in India is also represented. The cohort is a microcosm of the modern, global workforce.

A Degree Defined by Diverse Ambitions

Among the current cohort is an award-winning documentary filmmaker who utilises drones. He views the degree as a pivotal turning point in his academic and professional career. Another student is a physics scholar. He is inspired by Stephen Hawking and is adding data science to his path toward becoming a scientist.

These narratives are common within the programme. Approximately 25% of students are working professionals, while 40% are pursuing the programme alongside another degree. Whether it is a professional in their thirties formalising years of on-the-job experience or a recent school leaver, the programme accommodates a wide spectrum of career stages.

This variety creates a special space. Peer-to-peer learning goes beyond the lessons. It gives students a chance to see how technical skills are used in different cultures and areas of work.

Flexibility

Recognising that students manage significant external commitments, the programme is built to be flexible. Lectures and lab sessions are recorded and available on demand. This removes the need to be online at a set time.

Students can also adjust their credit load each trimester or take a break without losing their place in the programme. There is also an option for four set exit points. Students can earn certificates at these points and return to their studies after a gap if they need to.

Institutional Standing

Even though the coursework is delivered online, students are treated on par with campus residents. Students who join the programme receive an official institute identity card, email ID, access to the online internship and placement cell, and permanent alumni status. They are a part of IIT Guwahati in every sense of the word.

The Campus Experience: Community and Leadership

A diverse cohort means that peers can become teachers, mentors, and inspirations. Therefore, networking opportunities are built into the structure of the programme through on-campus opportunities at IIT Guwahati.

Students have a chance to meet their batchmates and teachers. They can listen to live lectures and make presentations. They learn how their technical skills can be applied across different cultures and sectors.

  • AI Confluence: This annual December event is a key part of the student experience. It is largely organised and led by the students themselves. It provides a way to practice leadership and project management. It also helps to build long-term professional relationships with faculty and industry experts.

  • Campus Immersion Programme: Students may visit the campus for up to four weeks (scheduled over a maximum of four visits). These visits are for hands-on training, faculty consultations, and working on projects together.

Applications can be submitted through the admissions portal until 30 April 2026.

Eligibility Candidates must have passed Class XII or an equivalent exam with at least 60% marks. It is not mandatory for students to have studied Mathematics in school. There is no age limit for applicants.

Programme Fee The total programme fee is ₹3,78,900. This is paid progressively each trimester.

Qualifier Tests Candidates will take an online two-hour objective Mathematics Essentials qualifier test. The test has a passing score of 35%, with multiple dates available between May and August 2026. Candidates who were eligible to sit for JEE (Advanced) in any year are exempt from this test.
