The Diversity & Equality Cell of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, commemorated the 136th birth anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar—economist, jurist, social reformer, and Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution—through a series of events in April 2026.

The commemoration commenced on 5 April 2026 with an Inter-Institute Quiz and Debate Competition, which drew active participation from students across institutions. The competition provided a platform for intellectual engagement with themes central to Dr. Ambedkar’s vision, including equality, social justice, and constitutional values.

The main programme featured a distinguished lecture by Mr. Dulal Ch. Medhi, President of Ambedkar Mission (Assam), who attended as the Chief Guest. The session also included the prize distribution ceremony for the quiz and debate competitions. Senior Institute leadership present on the occasion included Prof. Sukumar Nandi, Director-in-Charge and Dean of Administration; Prof. Anil K. Saikia, Associate Dean of Administration; and Mr. K. K. Tiwari, Registrar of IIT Guwahati.

On 14 April 2026, Ambedkar Jayanti, the Institute observed the birth anniversary with a floral tribute in honour of Dr. Ambedkar. Ms. Sanjan Hazarika, Vice President of AIISCA, Assam, joined the occasion. The commemorative programme concluded with a film screening at the Mini Auditorium, tracing the life, values, and ideology of Dr. Ambedkar.

Taken together, the three-phase programme reflects the Institute's thoughtful approach to

commemoration. It moves beyond ceremony to foster sustained engagement with Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy and encourages the academic community to carry forward his message of social equality and inclusive nation-building.
