Induction Week Welcomes Freshers To Campus

A six-day orientation for undergraduates eased new students into campus life at IIT Guwahati.

New BTech, BDes and BS undergraduates arrived at IIT Guwahati this July and settled in through a carefully structured induction programme held from 21 to 26 July 2026, ahead of the first day of instruction on 27 July.

Anchored largely at the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Auditorium, the week moved beyond paperwork and timetables, and brought academics, wellbeing, safety and culture together into a single week.

Finding Their Feet

The week opened on 21 July with departmental orientation at the respective schools, followed by a multilingual orientation for parents and an institute-wide orientation led by the Dean of Academic Courses. The pace continued on 22 July with an early-morning campus visit to the View Point along with the Director, Prof Devendra Jalihal and the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Perumal Alagarsamy.

This was followed by a Students' Affairs orientation. In the evening, fun sports events happened at Old SAC to break the ice.

Academics, Advisors and a Comedy Night

Day three leaned further into academic life, opening with a morning walk alongside faculty advisors and an interaction with Commander V.K. Jaitly at the Director's Office.

Sessions on career development, the Computer and Communication Centre, and the Lakshminath Bezbaroa Central Library rounded out the afternoon, before the mood lightened with a Laughter Therapy comedy night by Shreya Priyam Roy and Onkar Yadav.

Alumni, Opportunity and Community

On 24 July, freshers heard directly from alumni: Mr Ajinkya Malasane (Batch of 2013) spoke on entrepreneurship and the corporate sector, alongside sessions on campus banking services and scholarship opportunities. The afternoon introduced students to the Institute's extracurricular clubs, while a yoga session themed "One Earth One Health" opened the day and an aerobics session closed it.

In addition, students heard from Mr Ashwin Mahavadi (BTech, Civil Engg, Class of 2009), SVP, Skyroot Aerospace, about what it takes to build deep tech, and why the next decade in space looks promising for India.

Wellbeing and Awareness

Saturday, 25 July, paired a hostel plantation drive with two significant conversations: one with counselling psychologist Ms Loya Agarwala on handling mental health issues, and another with Sh. Harish Kumar of the Narcotics Control Bureau's Guwahati Zonal Unit. The day closed with an alumni interaction with Ms Dimple Chauhan (AIR 131) and a cultural programme celebrating the diverse traditions of the Northeast.

Safety and Awareness

The induction closed on 26 July with two pointed sessions — one with Adv. Millie Hazarika on POCSO, POSH and responsible social media usage, and a self-defence training workshop with Col. Prabir Sengupta — before the week wrapped up on a lighter note with a Band Night for Freshers.

The induction programme paired academic orientation with conversations on mental health, safety and belonging, while leaving room for laughter, sport and culture. It was a great introduction to undergraduates that that campus life is built on lectures and labs as well as companionship, fun, and belonging.
